In order to perpetuate Phi Sigma Kappa, chapters should educate their members in all aspects of fraternity life. In order to ensure strong and successful leadership for the future, chapters need to provide a member education program that contains all the ingredients necessary to develop tomorrow’s leaders. The attitudes and information they receive from this program will determine the chapter’s direction and spirit for some time. The “bottom line” then, is that members must go through a member education program that continues to educate and develop responsible, active, involved, knowledgeable and dedicated
brothers.
The intent of this program is to ensure continued member education on the history, values and purpose of the Fraternity, providing opportunities for personal development, and allowing for education on the local history of the local chapter. It is to be used in conjunction with, Hills and a Star, the member manual of Phi Sigma Kappa.
The new member participate in a number of activities to help them become productive brothers as well as grow as individuals. Some of the many activities that the new members participate in include:
Career Center Presentation-
- The presentation discusses the importance of school and how to develop a

resume. The speaker provides each new member with a basic understanding of this and also provides them with information to meet with a career planning councilor outside of this presentation.
Class Match
-At the first meeting of the process we acquire all of the new member’s schedules and teachers. We then try and match them up with a brother in each class to make sure they have someone to go to if they are having trouble in a class.
Greek Life Presentation
- Early in the new member process a representative form the university Greek life office comes and talks to them about the Greek life structure, its benefits, risks, and do’s and don'ts. This helps to answer any questions they still may have about Greek life as a whole. It also provides a connection with the Greek life office if they ever have questions in the future.
Time Management Presentation
-At any point during the new member process a professional is contacted through the university to give a presentation to the new members about managing school, extra curricular activities, work, the fraternity and all the other activities that they may be involved in. The new member educator is also in charge of making sure the new members are keeping up with all their activities.
Etiquette Dinner and How to be a Gentleman
-Every Semester an etiquette specialist is contacted to do a dinner with the new members teaching them simple table manors and what to talk about or wear to different occasions. Also an older alumnus comes to talk to them about the importance of being a gentlemen and ultimately what is “gentlemanly” behavior.
New Member Philanthropy
- At any point during the new member process the new member class as a whole should come up with some sort of small event to raise money for the national philanthropy (Special Olympics). Cookouts, sports tournaments, poker, community service and other games are excellent ways of getting people to help out and also to get the name of Phi Sigma Kappa out into the public.
These events are only some of the many events that phi sigma kappa participates in during the new member process. Our new member education program is all about orienting new student leaders for membership and involvement in their local chapter or colony and in Phi Sigma Kappa nationally. This program also educates them on officer and leadership opportunities in the local chapter, give them an understanding of our values and ideals and teach them the importance of good scholarship and community service.
